ABC Storytime: R is for...

R is for... runcible spoon? Reaganomics? Rogaine? I don’t know. Apparently I never did a storytime for the letter R, and I don’t have any quick thoughts now. Sure, there are tons of books with Read or Reading in the title, but which ones are good and not preachy?

In any case, if I don’t want to run late to work — sorry, run later than usual — I’ve got to leave the letter R to you, my blog readers. Please, help me out.

The Letter R

  1. I was thinking rabbit, too -- maybe the new DUCK? RABBIT! (Is that workable for story time?) How about LEMONS ARE NOT *R*ED? MISS *R*UMPHIUS?

  2. RED SLED by Patricia Thomas
Rapunzel, illus. by Paul O. Zelinsky

  3. Lesse, how about:

NAKED MOLE *R*AT GETS DRESSED by our man Mo

(I don't know how well this would work for a readaloud) HIPPO! NO, RHINO by Jeff Newman

    ROADWORK by Sally Sutton

For songs, you could do Ram Sam Sam or anything by Raffi (Apples and Bananas, anyone?)

  4. Lots of nice Raccoon picture books: RACCOON TUNE by Nancy Shaw and the KISSING HAND series by Audrey Penn. For Rabbits, I really like RABBIT EARS by Amber Stewart. There is also RATTLETRAP CAR by Phyllis Root. I am doing a Letter R storytime next week. I will post anything else I used for it.

  7. "Red" storytimes are fun. Or, how about "Rhythm" or "Rhymes"(or both)? Lots of great emergent literacy tie -ins with those.
And EM, Duck?Rabbit! does work in storytime!

  9. I'll contribute Ruby the Copycat by Peggy Rathman. How she came to write and publish her first picture book is a fabulous story you probably know from her Caldecott award speech... that speech is one of my favorites ever.

  10. How about that song, "The red, red robin keeps bob, bob, bobbin' along..."? Oooh or "Rockin' Robin" Can you play "Red Rover" at storytime? Probably not.

  12. Rutabaga and Rapscallion!

That would be a great name for a kid's book... "The Unlikely Adventures of Rutabaga and Rapscallion."

  13. Saints and Sinners recommended RUBY THE COPYCAT which prompts me to recommend a look at a number of RUBY books. I collect books with "RUBY" in the title as it is my mother's name and before her death I gave them to her on special occasions to have for her grandchildren....RUBY'S WISH by Shirin Yim is probably my favorite.
