There is just something special about June 8th other than being my birthday, I mean. The date is popping up in contests all over the place.
Parent Bloggers Network, in conjunction with Light Iris, is asking you to write a “Where Does My Time Go?” post anytime on Friday, June 8 (not before or after). Send your posts to parentbloggers@gmail.com and make sure to link both Light Iris and Parent Bloggers Network somewhere in your post. A random winner will receive a Fri/Sat ticket for the Blogher Conference. That’s a $200 value.
The Disco Mermaids are running a contest with the winner receiving tuition for the August 36 SBWI Summer Conference. All you have to do is list thirteen reasons why you should be the one to win. Entries must be received by 5pm PST, Friday, June 8th. Tuition for the conference is a wow! $425 value.
Then there’s this other contest that starts on June 8th where you give up as much of your weekend as you can possibly manage and you may or may not win some books, a T-shirt, and random stuff from the discount bin at Claire’s.
Anyhoo, to make things easier for you and for me, the contestants for the 48 Hour Book Challenge are now listed in my sidebar. Cool, huh? So now I can carry on with my own book reviewing, but you can look over to the side for a reminder of who else is playing this weekend.
Contestants, I urge you to make sure that you are indeed listed and that the link is going to the right blog.
I am stunned by the number of participants. Stunned, I tell you. How is it possible that I can’t get ten parents to take 48 seconds to sign the Girl Scout permission forms, but I can get more than fifty bloggers to take 48 hours and devote the time to reading? It’s a real head-scratcher.
(Btw, did you like how I put in that birthday reference all sneaky like? I’m so sly.)

Every Sunday, Seven Impossible Things has a post that asks the blog readers to list seven (more or less) great things that happened in the past week. It’s become a weekly ritual for me, not only to read and respond, but also to revisit and reflect to come up with seven things. Personally, I like the idea of coming up with exactly seven things, because it forces me to look back at my week and find the great things that happened to me. Sometimes they are big and obvious. Sometimes they are small and discreet. But the weekly task serves as a reminder to me that even in the chaotic, crazy weeks, good things are happening and sometimes you just have to allow yourself to see them.
Every Friday, I stop by Robin Brande’s blog to report on the nice thing I’ve done for myself that week. Now treating myself is not my issue. I’m always the woman who will take a nap rather than sort the laundry if said nap is needed. I generally make time to read and play and soak in the sunshine. However, going to visit on Friday has reminded me to pay attention to when I treat myself and to how I treat myself. Sometimes it’s a gaudy ring that will just make me smile. Sometimes it’s taking a break in the hammock. But what’s important for me is mentally checking in to make sure I am keeping some balance in what I’m giving to others and what I’m giving to myself.
This weekend has been a bit of a breath in the tight schedule I’ve been keeping. There have been some long conversations with my dad some overly long that have kept our connection. Together, we’ve worked on cleaning and fixing the deck. It’s been extremely satisfying to get that done. I’ve realized that next week is a little less busy than it has been, which should get me on track with my booktalking. And in something that qualifies as both a kick-ass thing and a nice thing I’m doing for myself, I’ve come to the conclusion that I over-prepare for these booktalks, so I’m scaling back. I’ll prepare a third fewer books and repeat them more to the different classes. It seems obvious now, but sometimes these moments of clarity come under crises.
Today I’m going to see my grandmother for her 96th birthday. Ninety-six years old, can you believe it? She’s still sharp as a tack, too. Tomorrow I’m allowing some downtime with my girls at the pool. But yes, I’ll be bringing a book. Maybe two.

I imagine that every day all over the Internet, people are saying, “Enough with these famous authors with their pretty words and their great stories. Where, oh where, are the interviews with MotherReader?”
Well, as it turns out, there are not one but two interviews with yours truly. Today I’m featured in the Seven Impossible Interviews Before Breakfast. These cool ladies of 7ITBB have been setting out over the kidlitosphere to get to know us. They’ve profiled Liz, Betsy, and Robert. Who knows when they’ll be coming for you. For extra interview fun, see if you can guess my favorite curse word before you get to that part. And please comment there, so it looks like people like me.
As a Cybils judge for picture books, my profile was also on their page on Friday. I missed it completely then because I was having a Bad Day, but now I’m happy to point it out as part of MotherReader week. (Hey, it was 7ITBB’s idea.) I could use a celebration, because I missed my own blog birthday in January. I’m a terrible blog mother.
Oh, and Sunday counts in MotherReader week because I broke the news about stuffed animals for the Pigeon, Knuffle Bunny, and Leonardo the Terrible Monster. That was awesome. In the same post, I also opened up discussion as to whether I should go to New York City on Friday, February 9th which actually, would make a spectacular conclusion to MotherReader week as I share time with my listed blog I would take to the prom, Fuse#8. And then we can celebrate her blog birthday in the proper way with alcohol.
