105 Ways to Give a Book

KidLit Drink Night in DC

The location for the KidLit Drink Night in DC is finalized. After my first choice apparently closed, the Capitol City Brewing Company took the lead by being the only other bar I knew in the area. The actual address is 1100 New York Ave, NW. The useful address is the corner of 11th and H Streets. Since Washington, DC, is basically a grid, those numbers and letters are pretty helpful. It’s when those pesky state-named streets come into play that everything goes haywire. In any case, the restaurant/bar is near the Washington Convention Center and the Martin Luther King Library, where Mitali is having her book launch.

So here’s the plan. On Saturday, June 23rd, I’m heading to the American Library Association Annual Conference to see the exhibits and hopefully say hello to some nice folks. I’ll be fielding book deals from, let’s say, 1:00–2:30. Just putting it out there. From 3:30–5:00 I’m going to Mitali Perkins’s book launch party at the DC Public Library. Liz from A Chair, A Fireplace, and A Tea Cozy and Betsy from Fuse#8 will be there. If you want to go, let Mitali know you’re coming. After the book launch, we will head to the now-disclosed location and stay until we get sick of each other. All bloggers, authors, illustrators, librarians, and blog-fans are welcome. And by welcome I mean ordered to attend.

Just a clarification for those not familiar with DC: It is a grid as MR says, but it's also divided into quadrants. In looking at a map, be sure you are looking for 11th and H streets NW (northwest). Otherwise you could end up in the wrong quadrant. MotherReader, do you know what the closest metro stop is?

I'm not sure yet if I'll be coming. I'd really like to, and since I live in Baltimore (only an hour from DC) it wouldn't be hard. But I'm leaving the next morning to go on vacation, and I'll be packing up on Saturday. If I can get most of the packing done the day before, I'll be there. I probably won't be able to come to Mitali's party, though, even though her book has intrigued me from the descriptions and interviews!

The closest METRO stop is Mt. Vernon Sq/7th St. Convention Center on the YELLOW or GREEN Line - at least that's the closest to the Convention Center and I'm going to have to assume the closest to the bar as well. Though Galley Place/Chinatown on the RED Line would be close too, if you're on the Red Line already.

Aw, Sheila, come. Pack in the morning, head to the book launch and a quick stop at the restaurant. Skip the ALA part since you did BEA and come hang with the cool kids. You'll get off okay on Sunday and you'll know you did something bold and fun. If it comes to it, then I DARE YOU!

Oh, a dare is it? I can't let that pass! I'll do my best to be there.

Leaving for a trip is just so stressful for me. I wish I were the kind of person who could just throw a swimsuit in a bag and be ready to go, but I'm not. I worry and stress about everything. Do we have everything we need? Will the cats be ok? Did I forget to turn the stove off? There's so many things that can go wrong when you are leaving for a week!

Thanks for the Metro info, MR. I live here, and I still don't know how to get anywhere! Is the metro stop the same for the DC library if we go to the book party first? Then walk to the Drink Night?

Just a note, Gallery Place/China Town metro stop (red line) is only 1.5 blocks from Mt. Vernon Square metro. It looks further away on the metro map than it really is.

ALSO! Please note that Capital City Brewing has multiple locations in DC. So don't go to the one across the street from Union Station!

They have tasty burgers and good crab dip.

Sara-- The library is between Metro Center and Gallery Place/Chinatown. Metro Center is on the red, orange, and blue lines. Gallery Place/Chinatown is on the red, yellow and green lines.

The Capitol City Brewing Company has excellent beer -- there's one called FUEL that actually has coffee in it, and it's particularly amazingly good. They also make their own root beer (for non-drinkers).

I blogged about my meal there back in November.

Oh, man. You guys are going to be having fun, and I'm going to be working. WHAT was I THINKING??? I've had a few years of a lot of conferences, and I skipped ALA last year, too, much to my regret. I need to stop not going to ALA -- although, admittedly, doing BookExpo and ALA in the same year (which I did two years in a row) is a killer, and it's hard for me to decide not to go to BookExpo.

Sigh.

You all have fun, and please post pictures/reports.

Well, I am going to be at Mitali's party, and I am bringing like 30 teens with me. My library's (Eva Perry Regional from Apex, NC) very famous Mock Newbery and Printz clubs are going to be there and were okayed by Mitali. So I would love to join the kidlit drink event as well. I am glad it's going to be near the library.

I'll be there, very happily. Thanks so much, MR, for organizing this!

I was reading through all the ALA conference material, and saw that LITA (Library and Information Technology Association) is having a happy hour at the exact same time and place..... at Capitol City Brewing Company at 5:30 pm on Saturday.
Just a heads up that it might be a tad crowded.

I'll be there for some homemade root beer and dinner! Mmmm. Looking forward to putting faces with blogging names! (I am undaunted by the LITA happy hour at the same time and place... the more librarians the merrier, right?)

I'll be there, if that's alright. (I'm tagging along with Julie.) Thanks!

I'm hoping to be there and will probably drag along a coworker.
